Step 3. Edit Text in InDesign File.

Select the text box containing the white type and go to Type> Create Outlines. Select the background shape and Shift+ select the outlined type (both are selected) go to Object> Pathfinder> Subtract. The outlined white type will be used to "cut" the type out of the background shape.

The Effects panel lets you set the fill of the text frame independent of the text itself. In the illustration below, text is not transparent, but the frame's fill is 50% transparent. I've also opened the Flattener Preview to show that the text (gray) is not affected by the transparency because it's above the fill of the frame (pink).

When you create an object or stroke, when you apply a fill, or when you enter text, by default these items appear solid; that is, they have an opacity of 100%. You can make the items transparent in a variety of ways. For example, you can vary the opacity from 100% (completely opaque) to 0% (completely transparent).

Often referred to as “transparency” in print design, opacity is the level of light allowed to travel through an object. Adjusting opacity allows you to fade, blend, brighten, or layer within a project. By default, a graphic or text will appear solid, with an opacity of 100%. Opacity refers to the amount of light that travels through an object.

Creating a clipping mask in InDesign is a little different from how you do it in all the other Adobe tools. I personally always fight when I have to create a clipping mask in Photoshop – I always forget some steps – while clipping masks in InDesign are fairly simple.. And if so, which version are you using? InDesign CS5 (which I am using) does not support PNG export as far as I can see and I know, that png will support any level of transparency of my originals (a logo, etc.). I am really looking for a way to get "the best out of two worlds: a powerful text engine from InDesign and transparency support.
